Woah. There are so many things going on in this video that it’s hard to decide where to begin. I suppose I’ll start with my weakest complaint and work my way up: I hated the reporting. I know that news channels are supposed to be unbiased and blahdie blah, but I guess I expected some sort of astonishment in his voice or noticeable shock at the given scenario. Maybe I should be impressed that they covered this story in the first place. I don’t know. But moving on.
I know next to nothing about the Pakistani political, social, or religious world, so pardon me if I come off sounding somewhat dense at any point during this post. I find the role of the Pakistani government in this situation extremely interesting. As people who are shunned by their society, I’m confused that the government has taken these women in as employees (read: tax monsters) in order to make money. Not that I support their beliefs regarding transgenderism, but it’s amazing that their government is willing to break extremely strict religious and social beliefs in the name of money. Then again, maybe I shouldn’t be so surprised.
The last thing that I want to point out is how amazing it is that these women have more power in getting people to pay their taxes than other law enforcers. The social stigma that they possess terrifies and shames the other citizens so much so that they are able to turn the tables and act as the ones in control. This relationship is so complex that I’m having trouble separating and relating my thoughts about it.
Honestly, I wrote this post so that I could hear the opinions of everyone else. What do you think about the video and the current situation it represents?
